Cabo Pulmo.

The Cabo Pulmo National Park is one of the most important areas of the region of the Sea of ​​Cortez. This importance lies in the large number of fish that live in the place and in its waters the only living coral reef in the northernmost part of the American continent is located, is the only hard coral entire peninsula of Baja California and also it is also one of only three remaining alive throughout North America, 1 and whose age is estimated at approximately 25.000 years reefs. This area is located right on the Tropic of Cancer and within the limits corresponding to the Mexican state of Baja California Sur.

 

The marine wealth of the place was already known from the mid-nineteenth century, but really began to explode from the mid-twentieth century, especially by the abundance of commercial species of fish and other like lobster, oysters and some more correspond to snails; although the area really is known worldwide for the abundance of mother of pearl, which started its operation since the days of the colony and began to appear commercially since 1912 appearing in the list of beading tools Pews Baja California, so during the first half of the twentieth century came several groups of divers around the world to engage in extracted.

In recent times it was decreed as a special protection area and was later given the status of a national park.

To reach this place, which is located 63 km northeast of the city of San Jose del Cabo is the nearest town, take the Transpeninsular Highway No. 1 towards La Paz to the community of Las Cuevas, where takes another paved road leading to the town of La Ribera; just before reaching La Ribera is another diversion that takes about 10 miles of pavement and then turns into dirt road; this road of about 17 km which borders the coast leads directly to the community of Cabo Pulmo.
